Lightman

“time is a circle, bending back on itself. The world repeats itself, precisely, endlessly” Lightman 6

“In the world in which time is a circle, every handshake, every kiss, every birth, every word, will be repeated precisely. So too every moment that two friends stop becoming friends, every time that a family is broken because of money, every vicious remark in an argument between spouses, every opportunity denied because of a superior’s jealousy, every promise not kept” Lightman 8

“Time is like a flow of water occasionally displaced by a bit of debris, a passing breeze. Now and then, some cosmic disturbance will cause a rivulet of time to turn away from the mainstream, to make connection backstream” Lightman 10

“In time, there are an infinity of worlds” Lightman 17

“In this world, there are two times. There is mechanical time and there is body time. The first is as rigid and metallic as a massive pendulum of iron that swings back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. The second squirms and wriggles like a bluefish in a bay. The first is unyielding, predetermined. The second makes upp its mind as it goes along” Lightman 18

“There the two times meet, desperation. Where the two times go their separate ways, contentment” Lightman 21

“Time flows more slowly farther from the center of the Earth” Lightman 22

“In time, people have forgotten the reason why higher is better. Nonetheless, they continue to live in the mountians, to avoid sunken regions as much as they can, to teach their children to shun other children from low elevations”  Lightman  24

“Time is visible in all places” Lightman 25

“Time paces forward with exquisite regularity, at precisely the same velocity in every corner of space. Time is an infinite ruler. Time is absolute” Lightman 26

“Time does not pass, but little happens. Just as little happens from year to year, little happens from month to month, day to day. If time and the passage of events are the same, then time moves barely at all. If time and events are not the same, then it is only people who barely move” Lightman 36

“No one is happy, whether stuck in a time of pain or of joy. The tragedy of this world is that everyone is alone” Lightman 49

“The passage of time brings increasing order. Order is the law of nature, the universal trend, the cosmic direction. If time is an arrow, that arrow points toward order. The future is pattern, organization, union, intensification; the past, randomness, confusion, disintegration, dissipation” Lightman 51

“There is a place where time stands still” Lightman 53

“Time travels outward in concentric circles—at rest at the enter, slowly picking up speed at greater diameters” Lightman 54

“Some say it is best not to go near the center of time. Life isa vessel of sadness, but it is noble to live life, and without time there is no life” Lightman 56

“Imagine a world in which there is not time. Only images” Lightman 57

“With time, each person’s Book of Life thickens until it cannot be read in its entirety” Lightman 63
